HIGHLIGHTS
OF THE SCHOOLS' HISTORY
| 1873 | Bigyn School opened. There were two schools on the same site, one for the boys and one for the girls. |
| 1898 | On September the 20th school was closed as there was a circus in town. |
| 1901 | School closed on the afternoon of 31st of January as the Proclamation of King Edward the seventh was being read by the High Sheriff of the County. |
| 1902 | School closed in June for a week to celebrate the Coronation of King Edward the seventh. |
| 1904 | School closed for the day in May as Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show was in town. |
| 1907 | School library started with 78 books. |
| 1911 | Concert given in order to raise money for a piano. £25 was raised and a new piano was bought. |
| 1911 | Boys from the school took part in a march through the town to the railway station during the Railway men's strike. This has been recognized as the first school strike in the country. |
| 1912 | On the 26th of September a tea party was given to all school children by Sir Stafford and Lady Howard to celebrate the opening of Parc Howard. |
| 16th Sept. 1921 | Student given a silver medal for perfect attendance in the Junior school. |
| 1971 | Due to the effect of subsidence from old mine workings, a new school was promised. |
| 1971 | Amalgamation of the two schools, with one head teacher. |
| 1982 | A new school in a semi open plan style was opened. The two old Bigyn schools were demolished and the old St Pauls infants was converted into flats for the old folk of the area. The new school was built on top of an old mine shaft ( which added greatly to the construction cost). Children aged between 3 and 11 years now attend the new Bigyn School. |
| 1991 | In May the school made a radio contact with Helen Sharman the first British Astronaut while she was aboard the Russian Space station M I R . Bigyn was one of eight schools from the British Isles chosen for this project and the only primary school. |
| 1991 | In November the highlight of this historic event was when Helen Sharman visited us at school |
