Type of school

The school is a Federal Primary School for pupils aged between 4 and 11 years. It is situated on three separate sites with one Unit at Coedmor, Cwmann, about a mile and a half to the East of Lampeter, one Unit at Ffarmers, and one Unit at Llanycrwys, Ffaldybrenin. The Units at Ffarmers and Llanycrwys are within a mile of each other and about six miles from Cwmann.

The Carmarthenshire Education Authority have placed the school in category A.  This means that the school is considered to be a traditional Welsh school.

There are Voluntary Nursery Schools on the campuses of Coedmor and Llanycrwys, providing continuity and ensuring a natural, comfortable transition for the younger pupils from the nursery stage to the reception class

Admission of pupils

Children are able to commence school in the term preceding their fourth birthday. Parents who wish to send their children to the school are invited to contact the Headteacher to arrange a visit. Each term new pupils are given the opportunity of spending an afternoon in school. On the same day parents are invited to an informal meeting with the Headteacher so that further information can be given to them about the school.

School Uniform

The official school uniform is purple and turquoise. The turquoise polo shirts and purple sweatshirts can be purchased at the school at a reasonable price. During the Summer Term girls may wear light blue gingham dresses, which can be purchased at any large store.

Please ensure that your child's name is marked on every item of clothing. Special clothes are required for swimming, dark plain shorts and white tops for physical education and suitable clothing for games.

BULLYING

Bullying of any sort - physical or verbal - will not be tolerated at this school, and steps are taken immediately to solve the problem. However we realize that bullying can take place unknown to the school or the parents, so if you see the child showing signs of unhappiness or showing reluctance to come to school it is important to find the cause or reasons. If you suspect that your child is being bullied at school, please contact us immediately so that the matter can be dealt with urgently.

ABSENCES

Parents are requested to inform the school, by letter, telephone or contact book, if their child has been or will be absent, due to medical or dental appointments, or any other reason. If no information is provided, the child will be recorded as being absent without permission.

 

PASTORAL CARE

The class teacher, under the instruction of the headteacher, is responsible for the care and educational development of the child. Members of staff are on duty during playtime and supervisors are employed during the lunch hour.

 

SCHOOL DINNERS    

School dinners are prepared at the school and can be purchased at a reasonable price.

 

EXTRA CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES

The pupils are given the opportunity to participate in various activities outside school hours. Several clubs have been formed, such as the Swimming Club, Folk Dancing Club, Computer Club, Sports Club, the Urdd and the School Orchestra.

 

MUSICAL INSTRUMENT TUITION

In the Junior classes, pupils are able to receive instrumental tuition - brass, woodwind, string, guitar and recorder - starting when the peripatetic music teachers feel that the child is physically able and musically capable to receive tuition. They will have the opportunity of being a member of the school orchestra and taking part in musical activities in assembly and concerts. A reasonable termly charge may be asked for instrumental tuition.

 

HOMEWORK

Homework is encouraged throughout the school so that the parents can assist their child's educational development. All pupils are provided with contact books, to record homework activities, which parents are asked to sign on completion. (See Homework Timetable)

 

Parental Involvement

There are several aspects of school life where the co-operation and support of the parents is essential. We hope to see all the pupils becoming happy and successful members of the school community. Should your child have any problems in school, or should you wish to discuss any matter appertaining to school, please contact the Headmaster.

Parents are invited to many of the events which are held during the year, including the Harvest Thanksgiving Service, Christmas Concerts, the Eisteddfod and the School Sports.

During the year Open Nights are held so that parents can see their child's work and discuss their educational progress with the class teacher.

The school has a Parent, Teacher and Friends' Association, and during the year, social, educational and fund raising events are held at the school.

 

SAFETY

During the time the pupils are at school, every precaution is taken to ensure their safety. In the event of minor accidents, the child will be treated by a member of staff, but in the case of more serious accidents you will be informed immediately so that the child may receive the appropriate treatment at the surgery or hospital. (See summary of Health and Safety Policy)

Lessons are given on First Aid, road safety, together with general safety in the home and the environment. The upper Junior class receive Cycling Proficiency lessons from the County Road Safety Officer.

 

COLLECTING CHILDREN FROM SCHOOL

A parking scheme is in operation to ensure the safety of children leaving the premises at the end of the school day. Parents who park outside the school yard, are requested to meet their children at the school gates to avoid any accidents on the road.

It should be noted that the Governing Body does not accept responsibility for any accidents that may happen on the school yard during this time.

 

EDUCATIONAL VISITS

During the year the school organizes a number of educational trips, which are relevant to the ongoing class theme. Parents will be informed of these visits, by letter, and are requested to make voluntary contributions towards the cost of such visits.

 

NEWSLETTER

A school-news sheet called ‘Carreg Ateb' is produced at the end of each term, and will include school news, events, activities and examples of pupils' work.

 

LINKS WITH THE COMMUNITY

During the year, support is given to numerous local and national charities. The school takes part in various concerts and events held in the community.

Links are being established with many local businesses, under the Educational Business Partnership Scheme, thus providing the pupils with many valuable experiences.

 

TEACHING METHODS

The National Curriculum is taught through thematic studies or as individual subjects, ensuring that the skills and knowledge are developed in the most effective way.

The thematic studies and individual subjects are taught within a structured timetable, thus ensuring that adequate time / attention is given to develop all areas of the National Curriculum.

 

SEX EDUCATION

Sex Education is not formally taught in the school, but any problems or questions that arise will be dealt with sensitively and carefully within other subjects such as Science, PSE, Religious Education and Health education. The Health Education course includes an unit of work for Years 6 on ‘Growing and changing', and when this is implemented other professionals - school nurse, doctor - are invited to speak and discuss matters with the children. Our aim is to foster the child's general development and to prepare them for the future, so that they can become useful and valuable members of society.

 

COLLECTIVE WORSHIP

The Morning Assembly has an important place in the life of the school. During these periods the staff and children come together for worship and the sharing of experiences. Children are given the opportunity of taking part in the service , as individuals, groups or class, and opportunities are given to congratulate them and highlight their good deeds and successes. Worship can take place either within the classroom, as Units or as a whole school, and children are expected to respect and appreciate these occasions. The Rev. Beti Morris also attends the school once every fortnight to take assembly and discuss various issues with the pupils.

 

SPECIAL EDUCATIONAL NEEDS

Care is taken to ensure that every child develops according to his age and ability. There are periods in every child's life when, for various reasons, they have difficulties which affect their development. An annual review is carried out during the Autumn Term, when all the children are tested and their work assessed, so that those with special educational needs can be identified.

In the majority of cases these needs can be met within the classroom, by preparing individual education plans, which will target the child's weaknesses. The general classroom work will also be differentiated, to suit the child's ability level. The children may also have regular, small group sessions with the Special Needs Co-ordinator, in order to overcome specific weaknesses. Please contact the headteacher if you feel your child is experiencing learning difficulties, so that the relevant support may be given.

 

ASSESSMENT

The children are continuously assessed through-

(a) Regular and detailed marking of work.

(b) Setting tests at the end of units of work.

(c) Recording the child's progress in accordance with the levels of attainment of the National

Curriculum.

At the end of Key Stage 1 (7 years) and Key Stage 2 (11 years) the pupils are tested using National Curriculum assessment tests, to ascertain levels of attainment in Mathematics, Language and Science.

 

REPORTS

Parents' Evenings are held during the Spring or Summer Terms, and, at the end of the school year, parents receive a formal, written report on their child's progress.

 

 

INFORMATION & COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY

Extensive use is made of computers throughout the school to support and consolidate work in all aspects of the school curriculum. The youngest children have the experience of using word processing programs to create and edit a variety of written work.

This early experience is developed in later years so that they have the skills and confidence to plan, prepare and produce a variety of written work.

The children are also introduced to, and have experience of, graphics programs, control technology and data handling.

The school is linked to the Internet, which enables us, not only to establish E-mail links with other schools, but also to receive information and data which is used in the teaching of many National Curriculum subjects.

The school also has it's own web page which is continuously updated by both staff and pupils.

 

INTERNATIONAL LINKS

Links are being established with schools in other countries. The links involve an exchange of ideas and news by letter and ‘E-mail', video conferencing and an exchange of information, books etc which are used in thematic studies by the schools.

 

SPORTS

Sport is an important part of the School's Physical Education Scheme. Our aim is to develop general and specific skills in various fields, including football, rugby, netball, hockey, cricket and rounders. Children have weekly sessions to develop the skills and they are given regular opportunities to put these into practice by competing against teams from other schools. Children are encouraged to participate in sporting activities provided by clubs and societies outside school hours.

 

COMPLAINTS PROCEDURE

In accordance with the Education Act 1988, the following procedures have been adopted regarding complaints by parents. In the first instance, all complaints should be brought to the attention of the class teacher and headteacher. Failure to resolve the complaint at this level will result in the submission of the complaint to the Governing Body. If parents are still unhappy they can, at this stage, approach the local Education Authority. However, we will do our best to see that all complaints are resolved at school level.
