A Challenging Curriculum

The National Curriculum largely prescribes the content of each subject area. Its implementation, however, is the responsibility of the Governors of the school. At Richmond Park, a broad, relevant, stimulating curriculum has been devised with the needs of the pupils at its heart. Due attention is given to each pupils aptitude and ability. Our ultimate goal is to enable each child to realise his or her maximum potential.

one to one teaching

Religious Education is part of every schools programme. This is broadly Christian in ethos and in content although children are encouraged to develop an awareness of other religions. Each day starts with a school assembly.

The core of the curriculum centres on the following areas:-

Language
This is principally English with Welsh taught as a second language.
Children's development takes place through the strands of 'Speaking and Listening', 'Reading and Writing'. Pupils are encouraged to read at home and use the extensive reading schemes available at the school library.

We are very proud of our achievements in Welsh as a second language and following our inspection were delighted that the Inspectors graded it as being of a very good standard.
Pupils are encourage to join the Urdd and enjoy participating in Sporting and Reciting Competitions. We have been successful on several occasions for example at Cardiff in 2002 we had a second and third place.

Mathematics
There is a direct focus on mathematics towards using and applying the skills, knowledge and understanding children develop of number, algebra, shape, space, measures and handling data.

Science
The teaching of Science has developed greatly over the last few years at Primary School level through the investigation of science and the gaining of an increased 'knowledge' and understanding of our world. The school has been at the forefront of the new developments and is fully equipped to provide a challenging investigative opportunity for its pupils.

The other areas of the curriculum where we strive to provide a solid foundation for growth are:
Welsh
History
Music
Geography
Design Technology
Art and Craft
P.E. and Health Education
Information Technology

In order to meet subject demands within a cohesive programme which is relevant to the children, we have developed a whole school cross-curricular thematic approach. By planning as a staff in this way we are able to draw on the curricular expertise of specific members of staff and to plan for the progression and continuity of learning experiences throughout the school. A combination of class, group and individual teaching techniques are employed within the classroom at the teacher's discretion.

Homework
This forms part of our positive approach to working with parents to support the children's education. Homework will be given to support existing curricular work at K.S.2 and is given on a regular basis at the discretion of the teacher. A home/school reading/library programme is sent home so that class monitoring of the child's progress is ensured at all ages and key stages. Close contact between home and school is actively encouraged.

Monitoring Pupil Progress
If a child's learning is to be effective it is essential that progress is monitored regularly. This allows remedial action to be taken if necessary and provides information to parents about their child's progress.

At Richmond Park we monitor pupils continually against agreed whole school criteria. We are then able to provide meaningful information to parents on a regular basis during open evenings. A formal written report is sent out to parents once a year. The staff will, however, discuss any problems with parents as and when they arise.
